Overview:
Colton Hood is a redshirt sophomore who transferred to Tennessee after stops at Auburn and Colorado. Seeking consistent playing time, Hood stepped in following an injury to teammate Jermod McCoy, immediately establishing himself as the Volunteers' primary cover man and quickly ascending up NFL draft boards.
Standing 6’0”, Hood possesses good length for the position. He is a physical defender who excels in press-man coverage, where he is comfortable jamming receivers at the line or shadowing them through their stems. While he is a willing tackler, he occasionally lacks the necessary fluidity to take optimal angles in the open field, leading to occasional missed stops. However, his effort and willingness to engage in the run game are consistent assets.
As a cover man, Hood is at his best when playing close to the line of scrimmage. While he performed in Tennessee’s Cover 3 scheme, he often looked less comfortable playing deep-third assignments, which required him to surrender cushion and react to the ball. He is far more effective when allowed to play aggressively at or near the line. Although he is not the fastest cornerback in this class, he exhibits great closing speed and does an excellent job of locating the ball when it is in the air.
Overall, Hood is a high-upside developmental prospect. While he may not be a plug-and-play starter in every system, his physical profile and comfort in press-man coverage make him an intriguing talent. In the right defensive scheme—one that values physicality and allows him to play aggressively at the line of scrimmage—Hood has the potential to become an every-down contributor at the NFL level.
