After a 2024 season that saw them set the modern-era record for losses, the Chicago White Sox spent 2025 proving they weren’t going to be a punchline. Under manager Will Venable, the White Sox posted a 19-win improvement, finishing with 60 victories and a renewed sense of identity.  The biggest acquisition of the offseason was the signing of Munetaka Murakami (2 years, $34million), the elite Japanese superstar who brings left-handed power to the middle of the order.  Chicago also brought in Seranthony Dominguez (2 years, $20million) to help stabilize the bullpen and Anthony Kay (2 years, $12million) for depth in the rotation.  While not a “move” in the traditional sense, the White Sox officially won the 2026 MLB Draft Lottery, securing the #1 overall pick; which gives them an inside track to draft UCLA SS Roch Cholowsky, the expected pick.  As they head into 2026, the rebuild has shifted into a youth movement and the 121-loss trauma is in the rearview mirror, replaced by an intriguing young lineup.

The Minnesota Twins enter 2026 under the narrative that this will be a “transition” year. After a 2025 season defined as a mid-summer fire sale and a 70-92 finish, the front office is pivoting away from a total teardown, choosing instead to build around a core of established stars while waiting for a wave of high-end prospects to arrive.  The organization has lowered its payroll significantly, entering the season with a budget ranked near the bottom of the league, which has limited their ability to chase top-tier free agents.  The key offseason acquisitions were the signings of 1B Josh Bell (1-year deal) and C Victor Caratini (2-year deal) to help the lineup.  They also brought back Taylor Rogers who last pitched for Minnesota in 2021.  Perhaps the biggest news was what that Twins decided against trading players such as Pablo Lopez, Joe Ryan, and Byron Buxton despite the heavy trade rumors which persisted.

The Kansas City Royals enter the 2026 season in what many believe is a “bridge” year – as the team is caught between the veteran core, which made them a surprise contender in 2024 and a wave of prospects (Jac Caglianone and Carter Jensen) ready to take over. After an 82-80 finish last season that saw them narrowly miss the postseason, the front office has doubled down on roster stability and subtle upgrades rather than a total overhaul in hopes that the Royals will contend for the AL Central title this season.  The most significant acquisition KC made during the offseason was signing Lane Thomas (1 year, $5million) to provide a consistent bat in the lineup and help reshape their outfield.  Starling Marte (1 year, $1million) is expected to get some time in the outfield and at DT as a platoon option.  Isaac Colins was acquired from Milwaukee and is expected to compete for significant time in left field.  In addition the Royals made sure to prioritize their core by reaching a 5 year, $57.5million extension with Maikel Garcia and a 2 year extension for Salvador Perez.

The Detroit Tigers enter the 2026 season with a “World Series or bust” mentality. After make the playoffs in consecutive seasons and falling just short of the ALCS in 2025, the Motor City is buzzing about the potential of this Tigers team.  This offseason was the most aggressive Scott Harris, the General Manager, has been as he brought in an infusion of veteran pitching, including Framber Valez (3 years, $115million) and the returning Justin Verlander (1 year, $13million); while retaining Gleyber Torres ($22.025million qualifying offer).  While the bats remain largely unchanged, the rotation and bullpen underwent a total transformation with the idea that this roster now has the pieces it needs to take the next step towards getting to the World Series.

The Cleveland Guardians enter the 2026 season with a clear objective: take the next step towards winning the World Series. After two straight AL Central championships, manager Stephen Vogt’s squad is leaning heavily into continuity and internal growth, hoping that a core group of familiar faces.  The most significant personnel move the Guardians made this winter was securing Jose Ramirez (7 years, $175million) to a contract extension, tying him to Cleveland through 2032.  The other acquisitions targeted depth, specifically in the bullpen, with the plan being that free agency will be used to fill gaps in the roster, while the hope is that the Guardians have a young roster that is ready to mature and turn their continuity into consistent production which leads to a World Series Championship.

The Pittsburgh Pirates enter 2026 with a familiar narrative: a top tier pitching rotation looking to carry a revamped lineup toward a playoff berth. The Pirates took a different approach this winter and made specific moves in hopes they can compete in a tough NL Central.  Pittsburgh acquired Brandon Lowe from the Rays in a three-team trade in hopes he can provide significant power to the middle infield. 

The St. Louis Cardinals enter 2026 much differently then their fans are accustomed to, following an offseason “teardown”. The Cardinals have moved on from franchise stalwarts like Nolen Arenado, Paul Goldschmidt, Sonny Gray, and Willson Contreras.  Perhaps the most painful move for the Red Bird fans, was the trade of Brendan Donovan to the Mariners in which the Cardinals received pitcher Jurrangelo Cijntje, OF Tai Peete, and OF Colton Ledbetter to continue to build the team.

The Cincinnati Reds enter 2026 looking to build on last season’s playoff appearance.  The front office prioritized internal depth development and cost-effective depth this winter in hopes that they can fill specific gaps rather than make massive blockbuster expenditures.  Their most notable acquisition was bringing back Eugenio Suarez, on a 1-year deal, in hopes he can re-capture the All Star form he had his first go-around. 

The Chicago Cubs enter the 2026 season as legitimate National Leage contenders after an aggressive offseason headlined by the signing of Alex Bregman (5 years, $175million). In an aggressive move, the Cubs traded top outfield prospect Owen Caissie (along with Cristian Hernanez and Edgardo De Leon) to Miami for Edward Cabrera in hopes that he can take their rotation over the top.

The Brewers enter 2026 coming off a franchise-best 97-65 record and an NLCS appearance. While the core of the roster remains largely intact, the offseason was defined by a massive shift in pitching philosophy as they traded away their perennial ace, Freddy Peralta, and will be leaning into one of the league’s best farm systems to replace him. 

The Los Angeles Angels enter the 2026 season in a state of transition. Following the departure of Ron Washington, the Angels opted for a bold, internal hire, naming former catcher, Kurt Suzuki as the new manager.  The decision to hire Suzuki was met with some confusion as he was considered a “dark horse” for the job and time will tell if he was the right hire.  With an 11-year playoff drought hanging over Anaheim, Suzuki will be tasked with fostering chemistry and discipline in a roster that is relying heavily on a young core group of players.

The 2026 season marks a unique chapter for the Athletics franchise as they continue to play in their temporary residence in West Sacramento, CA. The team is focused on developing their young core while bridging the gap toward their eventual permanent relocation to Las Vegas in 2028. The A’s have scheduled a six-game homestand in Las Vegas from June 8-14 (vs. Milwaukee and Chicago Cubs) to provide a “preview” for their future fans.

Friday, March 6, 2026 was the NHL Trade Deadline.  The deadline officially hit at 3pm ET. 

After 23 years in the NHL Barry Trotz has called it a career.  At a press conference this past Monday, Trotz announced he plans to step down as General Manager of the Nashville Predators and retire from his career in hockey once the team finds his successor.  Trotz is best known for serving as head coach of the Nashville Predators for the first 15 years of the franchise’s existence in which he coached nearly 1,200 games; which is an NHL record for most games coached by the first coach of an NHL expansion team.  Even though Nashville failed to reach the postseason in their first five years, they stuck with Trotz and he delivered by guiding them there seven of the next eight season.  He oversaw the development of key players such as David Legwand, Martin Erat, Marek Zidlicky, and Pekka Rinne, while continuing to put forward a competitive team each year.  At the conclusion of the 2013-14 NHL season, the Predators announced that Trotz would not return as head coach; though the team did invite him to work in their hockey operations department he declined as he wanted to continue coaching.

14 years.  That’s how long it’s been since the Buffalo Sabres made the playoffs.  Since April of 2011 when Buffalo blew a 3-2 series lead against the Philadelphia Flyers and were eliminated in seven games in the Conference Quarterfinals they haven’t sniffed the playoffs.  The drought has encapcilated four general managers and seven head coaches (eight if you count Lindy Ruff twice as he was the coach the first year of the drought).  Buffalo started this season 14-14-4 at the bottom of the Eastern Conference standings when on December 15th Terry Pagula fired Kevyn Adams and replaced him with Jarmo Kekalainen; who was the General Manager for Columbus for eleven seasons.  Since that decision was made the Sabres have gone on a tear which includes a 20-3-1 record in their last 24 games and currently sit at 67 points; 3rd place in the Atlantic Division.
