MLB Preview: Kansas City Royals

The Kansas City Royals enter the 2026 season in what many believe is a “bridge” year – as the team is caught between the veteran core, which made them a surprise contender in 2024 and a wave of prospects (Jac Caglianone and Carter Jensen) ready to take over. After an 82-80 finish last season that saw them narrowly miss the postseason, the front office has doubled down on roster stability and subtle upgrades rather than a total overhaul in hopes that the Royals will contend for the AL Central title this season.  The most significant acquisition KC made during the offseason was signing Lane Thomas (1 year, $5million) to provide a consistent bat in the lineup and help reshape their outfield.  Starling Marte (1 year, $1million) is expected to get some time in the outfield and at DT as a platoon option.  Isaac Colins was acquired from Milwaukee and is expected to compete for significant time in left field.  In addition the Royals made sure to prioritize their core by reaching a 5 year, $57.5million extension with Maikel Garcia and a 2 year extension for Salvador Perez.

Lineup

Perhaps the most significant move this winter for the Royals was the decision to move the fences in at Kauffman Stadium (9 feet down the lines, 10 feet in the gaps). This was specifically designed to help the lineup add to their power numbers.  Moving in the fences should especially help franchise star, Bobby Witt Jr; who is coming off a .294, 23 homerun, and 38 SB season; which should make him a 40/40 threat this year.  Vinnie Pasqauntino is the high-ceiling run producer in the middle of the order and his coming off a 32 homerun and 113 RBI season (those numbers should go up with the fences coming in).  Garcia, by signing that new contract, is viewed as the permanent leadoff solution and brings with him a high-OBP and his glove alongside Witt gives the Royals the best left side of the diamond in baseball.  Perez remains one of the premier power threats at the caching position and is coming off a 30 homerun, 100 RBI season of his own.  The Royals offensive numbers should all increase based on the fences being moved in.

Rotation

The Royals’ pitching staff remains the engine of the team’s competitive identity, relying on a mix of high-strikeout potential and veteran durability. Cole Ragans and Kris Bubic were limited in 2025 (61.2 innings and 116.1 innings, respectively).  The coaching staff has openly discussed a “six-starter” consideration for the early part of the season to manage their workloads.  Seth Lugo returns, after signing a 2 year extension, and will be focused on rebounding from a rocky August (9.11 ERA) and re-establishing his 2024 Cy Young-runner-up form by utilizing his fastball more frequently to keep hitters off his elite breaking ball.  Michael Wacha, fresh off of a stint with Team USA in the WBC, will be slotted into that #3 spot and his looked upon as the most consistent starter in the rotation, coming off 31 starts and 172.2 innings pitched last season.  Noah Cameron pitched well as a rookie last season and should hold down the $5 spot.

Bullpen

The Royals bullpen finished in the middle-of-the-pack last season, so the front office focused this offseason ensuring they have a specific arm for every late-inning scenario rather than relying on a single closer. Carlos Estevez lead the MLB with 42 saves last season, while holding an ERA of 2.45.  Lucas Erceg is considered the middle of the order stopper and coaching staff will be looking to deploy him in the 7th or 8th innings depending upon when the opponents’ best hitters are due up.  Matt Strahm, the southpaw, was acquired from Philadelphia and will also get opportunities in the later innings.  Nick Mears, acquired from Milwaukee, is a high-velocity arm that will help bridge the gap between the starters and the late inning relievers.
