MLB Preview: Detroit Tigers

The Detroit Tigers enter the 2026 season with a “World Series or bust” mentality. After make the playoffs in consecutive seasons and falling just short of the ALCS in 2025, the Motor City is buzzing about the potential of this Tigers team.  This offseason was the most aggressive Scott Harris, the General Manager, has been as he brought in an infusion of veteran pitching, including Framber Valez (3 years, $115million) and the returning Justin Verlander (1 year, $13million); while retaining Gleyber Torres ($22.025million qualifying offer).  While the bats remain largely unchanged, the rotation and bullpen underwent a total transformation with the idea that this roster now has the pieces it needs to take the next step towards getting to the World Series.

Lineup

While the offseason play was focused on pitching, the Tigers lineup remains largely unchanged from last season. Riley Greene, coming off a 2025 Silver Slugger award, remains the most dangerous hitter in the lineup and should be considered a candidate for AL MVP.  Spencer Torkelson, coming off a resurgent 31 homerun season, is the primary power source and offers Greene great protection.  Parker Meadows returns as the leadoff man; and while he was streaky in 2025, his elite range in center field makes him an everyday fixture.  Kerry Carpenter has the ability to drive the ball to all fields and should follow Torkelson in the order, which makes the Tigers 3-5 one of the most dangerous in baseball for opposing pitchers.  Dillon Dingler is a defensive standout and a 2025 Gold Glove Winner; whose bat took a leap last season solidifying himself as the everyday catcher.  Kevin McGonigle, the #2 overall prospect in baseball, has been the big story of spring training and is pushing for the starting SS job.

Rotation

The Tigers’ rotation this season contains high-ceiling, elite-velocity arms with proven postseason veterans. The front office believes this staff can withstand the rigors of a division title chase and has more depth than they’ve had in past seasons.  Tarik Skubal is back to lead the staff coming off back-to-back Cy Youngs, as his elite extension and nasty changeup make him not only the ace in Detroit, but one of the best in baseball.  Valdez comes over after 8 seasons in Houston and gives Detroit a legitimate co-ace and proven postseason workhorse who is incredible at inducing ground balls from opposing batters.  Jack Flaherty, who the Tigers officially exercised his $20million qualifying option, will be brough back to man the #3 spot after showcasing himself as a vital piece of the rotation during last season.  Verlander, the Tigers legend, returns after a resurgent 2025 and will provide a veteran stabilizing presence in the #4 spot.  Casey Mize, former #1 overall pick, is now fully healthy and should hold down backend of the rotation.

Bullpen

The Tigers’ bullpen has undergone a massive transformation compared to last season. For the first time since the save became an official stat in 1969, a team is opening a season with three pitchers who each recorded 20 or more saves the previous year.  Kenley Jansen was brought in (1 year, $11million) for the closer role and enters the season just 24 saves shy of 500 for his career.  Kyle Finnegan (2 years, $19million) is back after he was acquired at the trade deadline last season, after a 1.50 ERA stretch in Detroit.  Will Vest is coming off a season with a 91st percentile expected ERA and should take over the 7th inning role which currently he is better suited to do so.  Tyler Holton remains one of the most versatile weapons in the pen and will continue to serve as the primary high-leverage lefty, capable of getting out the best left-handed bats.
