Scouting Report: Ty Simpson

Name: Ty Simpson | Height: 6’1” | Weight: 211 lbs | School: Alabama |Year: RS Junior

Strengths

  • Arm Talent: Generates impressive power and velocity; possesses the "zip" to fit the ball into tight windows and the raw arm strength for deep vertical shots.
  • Pocket Movement: Displays advanced footwork and a confident ability to climb or maneuver within the pocket to avoid pressure.
  • Mental Processing: Shows veteran poise by making pre-snap checks at the line of scrimmage and consistently working through his progressions.
  • Intermediate Accuracy: Highly effective in the middle of the field with a clean pocket; capable of dropping touch passes over the top of linebackers.
  • Mobility: A functional athlete who can extend plays or pick up yards with his legs when the primary look isn't there.

Concerns

  • Consistency & Touch: Frequently misses "easy" routine completions; needs to improve his manual control and learn to take some velocity off the ball when a touch pass is required.
  • Pressure Response: Can become erratic and "sped up" when the pocket collapses, leading to forced throws and a tendency to lock onto his first read.
  • Ball Security: Needs to develop better internal clock and situational awareness; struggles to sense backside pressure and must learn when to throw the ball away rather than taking a sack or fumbling.
  • Off-Platform Accuracy: Accuracy dips significantly when forced to throw on the run or outside of a structured environment.
  • Anticipation: Still developing the "sixth sense" for receiver breaks, occasionally leading to throws that are slightly behind or too late.

Overview

Ty Simpson enters the NFL draft as a polished but polarizing prospect after a productive season at Alabama. Having sat behind Bryce Young and Jalen Milroe, Simpson’s patience paid off in a 2025 campaign where he logged the second-most pass attempts in school history, throwing for over 3,900 yards and 28 touchdowns. As the son of a football coach, his high football IQ is evident in his pre-snap communication and his disciplined footwork.

At his best, Simpson is a confident pocket passer who thrives when attacking the middle of the field. His arm strength is elite—highlighted by a 50-plus yard completion against Georgia thrown from a flat-footed stance—but he is still learning to modulate that power. His reliance on "firing" every ball makes back-shoulder fades and delicate shoulder-drops more difficult than they need to be.

The primary hurdle for Simpson is his play under duress. While Alabama’s offensive line was solid, Simpson struggled against elite defenses late in the year. When the pocket gets muddy, he has a habit of pressing, trying to "will" his team back into games by forcing dangerous throws or holding the ball too long.

Projected Outlook: Simpson has the physical tools and the cerebral foundation of an NFL starter. However, his "floor" is concerning if he is forced into a starting role on Day 1 without a strong supporting cast. If paired with a patient coaching staff that can refine his touch and pocket awareness, he has the ceiling of a high-level distributor.
