Overview
CJ Allen is a junior linebacker from the University of Georgia who established himself as a cornerstone of the Bulldogs' defense over his three-year career. A two-year starter, Allen profiles as a traditional, off-the-ball "Mike" linebacker who does a little bit of everything well.
Allen is a solid, reliable tackler who plays with power and maintains good form in the open field. Against the run, he shows flashes of brilliance—when he diagnoses a play quickly, he hits his gap with purpose and effectively finds the ball carrier. However, he is occasionally too deliberate in his diagnostic process, leading him to get caught on his heels or struggle to navigate past climbing offensive linemen. While he possesses the raw strength to shed blocks, he needs to refine his technique to become more consistent in disrupting the run game at the next level.
Allen’s most impressive trait is his acumen in pass coverage. He is highly comfortable in both zone and man-to-man assignments. In zone, he maintains excellent vision on the quarterback and excels at clogging passing lanes. In man coverage, he shows the ability to run with most tight ends and running backs, displaying both the patience and footwork to stay in phase. Furthermore, his ability to call the defense—a responsibility he held at Georgia—speaks volumes about his leadership and high-level understanding of defensive schemes.
While he may lack the elite, explosive speed that some teams crave, Allen is a "green dot" leader who elevates the defense around him. His combination of intelligence, production, and coverage ability makes him a reliable middle-of-the-field presence who can be an impact starter in the NFL.
