Overview
Dillon Thieneman is a junior defensive back at the University of Oregon. After spending two productive years at Purdue, Thieneman transferred to Eugene and immediately became a standout on a talented Ducks defense. He enjoyed an impressive 2025 campaign, finishing second on the team with 96 total tackles, five pass deflections, and two interceptions.
Thieneman typically operated as a two-high safety or a box defender, effectively serving as a third linebacker. He moves with great speed and closes on ball carriers with ferocity. While he occasionally misjudges his angles, he is generally reliable, consistently finding the right gap and arriving at the point of attack with purpose.
His run defense is arguably his greatest strength. Thieneman engages blockers with power and holds his ground well. When he reads a play cleanly, he is relentless in his pursuit, frequently showing up to assist on tackles or deliver the primary hit. In coverage, Thieneman is highly comfortable in both man and zone schemes. He displays excellent spatial awareness in zone coverage, whether patrolling the middle of the field or shifting toward the sidelines. While he has the athleticism to play single-high, he occasionally struggles to cover the full width of the field in that role. In man coverage, he is particularly effective against tight ends and running backs, though he can get caught flat-footed against quicker slot receivers, often forcing him to reach or play catch-up.
Thieneman’s biggest technical hurdle is his discipline against play-action; he has a tendency to fixate on the backfield, which can leave him vulnerable to deep routes. However, these are manageable issues. Thieneman represents the modern "do-it-all" safety that NFL teams covet. Given his ability to cover tight ends, support the run from the box, and navigate zone responsibilities, his versatility is exceptional. While safeties often face devalued draft status, Thieneman’s multifaceted role and high-impact play should make him a priority target. I expect he will be drafted much earlier than many currently anticipate.
