Scouting Report: Arvell Reese

Name: Arvell Reese | Height: 6’4” | Weight: 243 lbs | School: Ohio State | Year: Junior

Strengths

  • Elite Athleticism: A high-level, "freak" athlete with incredible movement fluidity and balance for a player of his size.
  • Versatility: A true defensive chess piece; comfortable playing off-ball linebacker, off-the-edge rusher, or interior blitzer.
  • Physicality: Powerful at the point of attack; holds his ground well against offensive linemen.
  • Discipline: Highly disciplined in run defense; maintains gap integrity and holds the edge with composure.
  • Football IQ: Reads the game at a high level and thrives in "spy" roles against athletic quarterbacks.

Concerns

  • Block Shedding: Occasionally struggles to disengage from blockers once locked in at the line of scrimmage.
  • Pass-Rush Development: Needs to expand his repertoire of moves beyond "bull-rushing" to become a more consistent threat.
  • Man Coverage: While capable, he lacks the lateral quickness and pure comfort in space to consistently shadow elite running backs or wide receivers.

Overview:

Arvell Reese is a third-year standout from an incredibly talented Ohio State defense. A two-year starter, Reese has become one of the most intriguing "jack-of-all-trades" prospects in the country, frequently rotating between off-ball linebacker, edge rusher, and interior pass-rusher. At 6’4” and 243 pounds, Reese possesses a unique frame that allows him to fly around the field with rare speed and balance. Because of this rare blend of size and agility, many evaluators are comparing his potential impact to that of Micah Parsons.

As a pass rusher, Reese is explosive. He consistently wins by driving blockers back into the pocket, though his technical refinement is still in its infancy. He relies heavily on his natural power and physical intimidation, but his impressive footwork and quick-cut ability suggest he has the potential to develop into a much more sophisticated technician as he adds more nuance to his pass-rushing attack.

Reese’s versatility is a double-edged sword. While his ability to drop into zone coverage or act as a quarterback spy provides immense value to a defensive coordinator, he is not a "coverage-first" linebacker. He can be susceptible to quicker athletes in space and sometimes struggles to mirror speed-based receivers. However, against the run, he is solid and disciplined. He does an excellent job of occupying space and refusing to be moved off his spot, which makes him a reliable anchor on the edge.

Overall, Reese’s highest ceiling is likely as an edge defender, but it would be a mistake to limit his impact by "shoehorning" him into a single position. His ability to move around the formation and mix up blitzes is a massive advantage. While he will require patience and coaching to maximize his pass-rush productivity, his junior campaign—which included 6.5 sacks and 10 tackles for loss—proves he is already a disruptive force. In the right system, Reese has all the traits to become a centerpiece of an NFL defense.
