Scouting Report: Jermod McCoy

Name: Jermod McCoy | Height: 6’0” | Weight: 193 lbs | School: Tennessee | Year: Junior

Strengths

  • Movement Skills: Extremely fluid athlete; excels at flipping his hips and changing direction.
  • Coverage Technique: Displays excellent mirror-and-match skills off the line of scrimmage.
  • Ball Skills: Shows an instinctual ability to locate the football and break on the ball with timing and precision.
  • Hand Usage: Highly effective at maintaining leverage by "riding" the receiver through the route without committing blatant penalties.
  • Versatility: Comfortable and effective in both man and zone coverage schemes.

Concerns

  • Physicality: Needs to be more assertive with his jam and physicality at the line of scrimmage.
  • Release Consistency: Can be beaten off the snap by elite, quick-twitch wide receivers.
  • Penalty Risk: Occasionally plays a "grabby" style that can lead to flags; recorded eight penalties in 2025.
  • Tackling & Run Support: Needs to refine his tackling form (wrapping up rather than leading with the shoulder) and improve his ability to shed perimeter blockers.

Overview:

Jermod McCoy is a talented junior cornerback who has been a collegiate starter virtually from day one. After beginning his career at Oregon State, he transferred to Tennessee, where he cemented his reputation as one of the most reliable cover men in the country. Although an ACL injury sustained in January 2025 forced him to sit out his entire junior campaign, his body of work over his first two seasons remains among the best in this draft class.

McCoy is a fluid mover who excels at staying in phase with receivers. He is rarely out of position, and even on the few completions he allows, he is typically draped all over the target, forcing the offense to make a perfect throw and catch. He is equally effective in man and zone coverage, showing a high football IQ that allows him to keep his eyes on the quarterback without sacrificing his responsibility to the receiver. He plays with controlled aggression, often preferring to force an incompletion rather than risking his leverage by over-committing for an interception.

The primary concerns for McCoy are two-fold: physical consistency and medical durability. In the run game, he is a willing participant, but he must improve his tackling technique—specifically his tendency to lead with his shoulder rather than wrapping up—and learn to shed blocks more effectively.

Ultimately, McCoy’s draft position will hinge on his medical evaluations following his ACL recovery. From a pure talent perspective, he is arguably the top cornerback in this class. While his injury history may cause some teams to hesitate, the 2026 season will see him nearly two years removed from the initial injury, providing a favorable timeline for his return to peak form. If his medical checks pass, McCoy has all the tools to be a day-one lockdown starter in the NFL.
