MLB Season Preview – San Diego Padres

Published on February 25, 2026 at 4:40 PM

The San Diego Padres enter the 2026 season in a very similar position that they were in last season. They have a lineup full of star power that is overshadowed at times by a thin pitching staff. The Padres under first year manager Craig Stammen are attempting to navigate a transition period while attempting to remain in the hunt for a playoff spot in the very competitive NL West.

Lineup:

The offense remains the engine of a team. While the departure of Luis Arraez leaves a hole at the top of the line up, the heart of the order remains dangerous with Fernando Tatis Jr; Mandy Machado, and Xander Bogaerts. All eyes will be on Jackson Merrill who is coming off an injury shorten season but play well when healthy.  He is projected to hit near the top of the order and submit himself as one of the best bats on the team.  The Padres made some late moves most notably signing Nick Castellanos to play first base which will be a major experiment in spring training.  The addition of KBO star, Sung-Mun Song, add much-needed versatility to the lineup.

Rotation:

If the lineup is a Ferrari the starting rotation is currently a car being rebuilt in the driveway. The losses of Dylan Cease and Robert Suarez are massive blows to the depth of the staff.  Nick Poveda has earned the opening day nod after a stellar 2025.  He’s followed by Michael King, who resigned on a 3 deal; along with the returning Joe Musgrove; who is looking to regain his previous form after missing 2025 due to Tommy John surgery.  The potential is there to have three solid starters in the rotation.

Bullpen:

The bullpen should remain a strength. Mason Miller, Adrian Morejon, Jason Adam, and Jeremiah Estrada feature some of the highest strikeout rates in the league.  There has been talk of transitioning Miller into a starter if the rotation falters.  Morejon provides a left-handed power arm that can go multiple innings if needed.  Adam is the right hand bridge option that is expected to be the primary 8th inning worker against right handed heavy lineups.

Projected Lineup:

  1. Xander Bogaerts – SS
  2. Jackson Merrill – CF
